BNC Connector for audio, video, and networking applications that provide a firm connection. BNC is used to connect a variety of different coaxial cables. These are different from many connectors because of their snap-lock superior architecture, which keeps the plug firmly in its socket.

The female connector of the BNC connector has two bayonet lugs, and mating is completed with a quarter-turn of the coupling nut. Each gender connector has an outer conductor with slots and some plastic dielectric.

At higher frequencies, this dielectric produces increasing losses. The slots may radiate signals over 4 GHz, hence the connector is useable but not always reliable up to roughly 11 GHz. BNC connectors are constructed to fit the cable’s characteristic impedance of 50 or 75 ohms (with other impedances such as 93 ohms for ARCNET available though less common).

The BNC was originally developed for military usage, but it is now widely used in video and RF applications up to 2 GHz. In radio, television, and other radio-frequency electronic equipment, BNC connections are used with miniature-to-subminiature coaxial cable.
